A lawyer takes a train trip with his autistic son on the eve of World War II. A woman gets lost in New York's subway system. A man wakes up to find he is the owner of an alcoholic monkey. A schoolteacher has a fling with a manipulative puppeteer. A paranoid kleptomaniac tries to keep out of trouble by stealing from himself. Mick Stern's Get Out of Town is a remarkable debut collection of short stories filled with the irreverent and the unexpected. Stern’s characters and the off-kilter worlds they inhabit are vividly evoked with a humor that ranges from sharp witted to hilariously insane. Stern is a writer and artist who teaches screenwriting at NYU's film school. He is the author of the plays High Maintenance (2006). He also co-wrote the indie feature film Welcome to Dopeland. His superb book of poetry, The Chicken's Guide to Crossing the Road, and the laugh-out-loud e-leaf High Hopes can be dowloaded from our Bookstore.
